Our Story

We're on a mission to provide students with the tools of academic success.

Over more than a decade, we have worked to reshape the landscape of independent educational assistance. In the process, we’ve been students as much as teachers. Working with thousands of students has taught us a lot about the obstacles that can make academic success hard to reach. And we’ve learned a lot about how to help students overcome those hurdles. We’ve developed industry-leading tools that empower students to reach their potential.

Standardized Test Answer Sheet

We started with standardized test preparation.

College entrance exams can cause a great deal of anxiety. Many students who have been successful academically struggle with testing, and we wanted to be able to help those students build their testing abilities in order to get scores that would more accurately reflect their academic strengths. At the same time, we felt that it was important not to fall into the common trap of treating test preparation as a process with a single goal: a high score. While test scores are undeniably a key element in admissions – whether it be high school, college, or graduate school – the problem solving, critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that those tests attempt to assess are the true prize. So we set about building a curriculum that could be tailored to individual students’ needs to increase the score but, more importantly, to build the skills. We spent most of a decade doing research, writing, and editing, and the end result was our one-of-a-kind textbook, Reason. Solve. Create. It presents students with all of the skills relevant to both the ACT and SAT in a format that pushes them to challenge their minds. We use this textbook as the toolkit for our one-on-one work with students, guiding them through its content in a way that matches their learning styles.

We launched an academic coaching service based on relationships.

Working one-on-one with our students over extended periods, we naturally developed strong relationships. Many of our students would come to us with challenges from other areas of their lives, and we discovered a common theme. Many of our students were struggling to maintain academic performance without adequate resources to help them. So we sought out some of the best teachers around: instructors who not only understood the content inside and out, but who were familiar with its presentation in various school settings and were adept at giving students new ways of approaching the information. We were gratified to discover that, in many cases, a targeted intervention focused on key challenge areas could turn around a student’s performance in a class. We made it our goal to find ways to turn challenges into strengths and to give students the tools to build continued success on their own.

We found ways to help smart students with weak grades. As more and more families came to us for help, we found that many students and parents were frustrated by a feeling that students’ intelligence wasn’t coming through in their school performance. So we dug in, researched, read, and talked to experts. And we learned about the skills that are absolutely essential to academic success… but are almost never taught in schools. These, collectively known as executive function skills, are comprised of organization, working memory, planning, and a host of other abilities. These are the skills that allow students to get out of the house on time with all of their homework, start big projects early and finish them effectively, or plan the steps of a task and see them through. We’ve built a brain-based process for guiding students toward stronger skills sets in these areas, and we continue to implement new processes for coaching students to mastery. Students come to realize growth that will make them better students now and more effective agents for pursuing their goals down the road.
